Re: Fungus (sort-of OT)
Hi Robert,
I have never seen this on my other Bettas but I have never gotten commercial Bettas? I think that part of the problem is that these fish were wild caught and just came in about 10 days ago. The same day they came in, a tank crashed on my right hand and I ended up getting 17 stitches on my right hand so water changes were laxed a bit. It's a bit disappointing though as the tank is new and I ordered it just for these fish. I removed all of them but could not find 2 of them. So far, 6 of the 20 have died :(

Yikes, that is a bitch of an infection to get rid of. Commercial Bettas
come down with it alot. I think it is columnaris too but I am not sure.
Whatever it is, in Bettas it seems harder to cure. For a fungus I would use
Super Sulfa by Aquatronics. For columnaris I have had best success with
nitrafurizone in the form of Jungle's Pond Fungus Eliminator or Aquatronics
Furacyn. I would do massive daily water changes and daily treatments
afterwards until things look better. Remove any carbon. I would keep the
temperature in the mid 70's to 80F. I think Aquatronics BettaMax is geared to
this disease but I have never used it. I know how to go after columnaris in
killies and tetras but Bettas don't quite fit the profile. Fish can absorb
nitrafurizone so it is always a good choice IF it works on your illness;
otherwise, it is useless. Fish infected with columnaris and showing symptoms
usually die but the antibiotic stops the spread and the others survive. I
wish I could say, "use this," but I cannot. I have seen nitrafurizone seem to
work and not work on Bettas looking like yours. It would be my first choice
but it may not work. I would use some Amquel too. It helps with cardinals and
columnaris but might be unnecessary in your very soft acid water. I wish I
could be more helpful but hopefully I have helped you think it through some.
Some say cures work better in water a bit harder and closer to neutral but I
do not know. I raise my water chemistry when treating killies, but Bettas
might not like the less than ideal water when they are so sick. I wish I knew.
Good Luck,
Robert
