Re: Plastic Boxes Styrene

Thanks to all who commented regarding durability of my Penn-Plax tanks.

And Chris Browning wrote ...."I have been thinking of using these for a while now, but have yet to find a good way to filter them. What method do you use? All sponge filters I have seen are too tall, and all box/corner type filters I have seen can inhale fry. Thanks"

I made my own filters using PVC tees and street elbows, etc. For filter media I cut down the sponge stoppers that Carolina Biological Supply sells for covering their fruit fly vials. However, in a recent post Tony Terceira mentioned that www.jehmco.com has a small sponge filter developed for the AKA. I talked to John at Jemco today and ordered four units for trial. (It's true-they were developed for the AKA). The sponge is 2 3/4" dia. and the whole unit is 3 1/2" overall height. This will easily fit into my Penn-Plax tanks and may be more affective than my home made filters???We'll see. The older, clear plastic shoe boxes that I have measure 3 1/2" high, therefore, the Jehmco filters will be too high for my older boxes :-(.
