RE: algae
Algae might be an eye sore. I once had this problem and resolved it by
introducing apple snails to my tanks they thrive on it. and of course
reducing the light affluence into the tank.

This sounds very much like the problem I had with cyanobacteria in a new
tank a few months ago. Does the stuff grow almost like a sheet of green
slime that can be wiped-off and then netted out? If so, that is what it
might be.
I was provided a solution to this which involved treating the tank with
erythromycin. 4 fairly strong doses were needed, on days 1,2,3 and, I
think, 7. I don't have the specific instructions and dosages with me
here, but they came off the net, so a search might locate it for you. By
the way, it was relatively expensive to do this (aquarium store
erythromycin isn't cheap) but it worked well to rid the tank of the
problem.
