Styros and heat loss-attn Dale

Hi Dale;
I tried one inch styrofoams at 45 degrees night time temperature. A one
inch styro in a 48 hour trip comes to within one degree of outside
temperature, if out long enough during the trip. Although the box arrived
at 65 degres, a min inside hit 46 degrees and outside 45 degrees. (No fish
loss with gardneri though)
Radio Shack had some $10 indoor outdoor thermometers that recorded high and
low values. I used them in shipping containers to see what the styrofoam
did. Just to satisfy yourself stick one in a styro outside and check the
inside temp every few hours. Be sure to put some bags of water in the styro
as they buffer the temperature loss. A styro will slow the temperature
drop(or rise in the heat) for a few hours and that is about it. An
ovrernight mailing with a heat pack is about the only way to go in the
winter.
