RE: grindal worms
Mike,
Last year someone on the list posted this as something he had read as a
sure fire (no pun intended) way of getting rid of mites from grindal/white worm
cultures. He admitted he had not tried it and when I first read it I was not
gonna jump in either. However, I now use it routinely and it works like a
charm.
Take out the culture and put it under a strong light for about an hour. Strong
sunlight will work best but in winter I have used the Metal Halide lamp that I
keep over my Green Water / Daphnia. The worms will all dive to the bottom of
the culture. Take a butane torch and run it over the surface very quickly.
This kills all the mites and all their eggs. Positively. They are gone and do
not come back.
The thing that made this so useful for me was finding at local hobby store a
pocket butane torch that fills with the butane made for butane lighters. This
gives a very fine (1/8 inch thick) flame that will concentrate the heat very
locally.
Hope this helps
