I was touched by Bruce Turners comments about the introduction of exotics
into Florida waters. As you all know, this is a world wide problem. I talked
with Peter Tirbak when he returned from his last collecting trip to Gabon.
While there, he contacted some of the peace corps workers who were very
excited about their latest project. They were going to damn up small forest
streams and introduce large mouth bass to proved a food source for the
people
of Gabon. I was stunned by this revelation and asked Peter if he tried to
discourage this activity. Peter said he warned them about the dangers this
presented to the native fish fauna. Let's hope it did some good.

It is unfortunate, that despite the well-know damage exotics do to native
species, these introductions continue. Either people are ignorant or
potential short term economic considerations arre all that matters to them.

Based upon all the data available to me concerning the changing environments
of West Africa and Latin America, it is no exaggeration to say that many
killifish species are in danger of becoming extinct in the wild. We know
that
 A. elberti N'tui, Fp. oeseri and Fp. walkeri GH2 are gone in the wild as
well
as several species of desert pupfish. As chairman of the Emergency Survival
Program of the Killifish Conservation Committee, efforts are being made to
maintain and strengthen captive populations of these species.

It has recently been brought to the attention of the KCC that Fp robertsoni
is probably extinct in the wild. The one isolated pool where it has been
collected in the past has been covered over for farming and it is highly
probably that this was the only surviving habitat when the species was
discovered by Dr. Radda in the 1970s. I would certainly like to hear from
anyone who still has this species and is willing to cooperate in trying to
establish a large population in captivity. There is reason for concern for
Fp. rubrolabriale also that is in the same part of Cameroon as Fp.
 robertsoni.

By the way, a new Fundulopanchax has been found in Equatorial Guinea by some
Spanish collectors. It is very attractive, I am told, and pairs are likely
to
show up at the AKA convention. It has been described but it is likely to be
challenged due to the controversy over it is accurate to place it in
Fundulopanchax. I was given the name but it might be in error because it was
not latinized and doesn't seem right so I will not pass it along until this
is clarified. Other outstanding populations of A. cameronense were also
collected in Equatorial Guinea and have entered the hobby in Europe. The
same
group went to Bioko Island and brought back a Chromaphyosemion species that
does not appear to be either bitaniatum or splendeploure. Pairs of these
were
distributed at the West Coast Weekend.

The day will come when news of killifish extinctions will come regularly to
our attention and it is hoped that all AKA members will take an interest in
conservation and try to maintain captive populations. The only failure is
not
 to try.
