It is supposed to be a word of dutch derivation, maybe you have to ask a
dutch linguistic :-)
At my side (as all other italians do) I call them killi or ciprinodontidi
(ae if you refer to the latin family name)
anyway because actual english is a language with not a strong relations with
the original wording I suggest everybody to call them killi, just as a rule
of economy, off course killie is still valid but not encouraged, the rules
of a languages are made by use not by professors (anyway professors can
coordinate the evolution and discourage a non-standard use).
