gardneri/study

Hello, all.

I would be interested in contacting anyone, anywhere, who is seriously
interested in the gardneri group, has stocks from known
localities(including those labeled "nigerianum)available and might be
interested
in working with my lab. This would include more commonplace stains
likeAkure, Misaje, etc. and rarer ones also. I would also appreciate
being informed of any useful articles on the group that have appeared
recently. I haven't been able to find any, though there are a lot of
informative websites out there.

I think I'm going to be getting into F. gardneri a bit. I shouldn't be
starting yet another research project, but over the years I have been
impressed with the research opportunities that various westAfrican
rivulines present. In particular, the opportunity to relate chromosomal
divergence (which they have in large amounts) with various types of
genomic changes on the DNA level (which is what I do for aliving, in
part)is too good to ignore. Also (and this is probably something I
shouldn't admit) I LIKE to breed killifishes and I have reached that
stage in life where liking something is increasingly
important.

I've chosen the gardneri complex primarily because all of them are
easily propagated over peat as soil breeders (I know they are
switchbreeders)and I don't have time to pick lots of eggs from mops.
Also, and this is important, an albino stain is (was)available),
ostensiblyof gardneri Akure. I am unaware of albinos of any of the
Chomaphyosemions(which have even more chromosomal divergences than the
gardneris do, apparently). Albinos are important/interesting for
various technical reasons. Also, I know that interpopulation crosses in
the gardneri group
are often mule-sterile (if you doubt this, try crossing Akure x
Misaje---you'll get marvelous F1s, and then the "fun" will begin whenyou
try to breed them).

Anyway, To get started, I'm looking for vigorous, fecund breeders of
akure, akure albino and misaje.

Any help would be appreciated. bj turner
