Sand isn't always sand.   Playground sand, is one thing here in St. Louis
and 10 miles down the road it may well be 50% sand and 50% river silt.  

Sand which is suitable for our purposes must be insoluble and low in
limestone or lime content.  

In our area we are blessed with wonderful Meremac River Sand which is
great for fish tanks and cheap.    Often sold as "Tube Sand" or "Traction
Sand"
