Many types of sand can abrade off small particles every time you stir it. 
Greensand is particularly bad in this regard. What you can do is rinse it 
many times GENTLY and then put it in the tank GENTLY and then run a box 
filter for a day or so. It will clear up in 99 times out of 100. In those few 
cases where it takes longer, some Java moss (the miracle stuff) will help for 
reasons I don't know.
