In fact Marc Bellemans brought some dry mud from the bottom of a Notho pool
back with him. As best as I recall he both hatched eggs from it and used it
for spawning. I do not recall the particulars though.

I am sure someone has tried it but I don't think it would be very practical.
If some people regard peat as "messy" I cannot begin to imagine what they
would think about using fine mud. The muds in Notho habitats are so fine
that they stay in suspension for ages and the water is permanently cloudy.
With the movement of the fish stirring it up, you would never see them. And
imagine what it would do to your filters ! Drying out masses of mud would
also be a real chore.
It may work but why bother when peat works just as well.
