RE: Cut your own

Hi Kristi,

Lexan is a very good material for canopies from what I have heard. It is
expensive though. For a similar $4.00 you get a 2'X 2' square of styrene and
for about $6.00 you get a 2' X 4' piece this reduces the cost for a smaller
tank to under $2.00 each.

Peace,

~RJ~

I've used Lexan on one of my tanks. However the largest piece spanned a
whopping 9 or 10 in, so I don't know how it would do on a larger tank. I
looks exactly like plexi, but doesn't bow. About $4 for a 14 x 12 sheet. Its
about 1/16 in thick and is supposedly stronger than glass. Bought it at Home
Depot.

one word of warning tho-- each employee i've
encountered doesn't know the metric system! So if
you're getting glass cut to make a tank, (it was
easier for me to measure in MM and CM because the
glass thicknesses were given in MM...) you'll either
have to convert back to imperial or do some arm
twisting and teach the employees that "metric is the
LITTLE lines in counts of 10 on the bottom of the
ruler..."

I've also heard to silicon marbles to the top as a
handle.
I've tried using plexiglass cut with a plastic jigsaw
blade as a tank cover, but it bowed in the middle. You
could prevent that but cutting a brace to silicon over
the middle... or just go with glass. Don't forget to
cut holes for airlines, filters, heater cords, etc.
