RE: "Extinct" pupfish (longish)-even longer

Wright,

Devil's Hole is actually part of Death Valley National Park/Monument. I
defer to Doug Treloff who was the range biologist before Dave St. George. I
believe Doug is still at Death Valley. When I last visited and talked with
Doug to any detail we discussed the water situation for Cyp. milleri and a
need to understand the source for the water (springs) for these fish. On
Doug's wall was a map of monitoring wells in the Nevada Test Site which is
the source for the water which flows out at Ash Meadows and eventually the
Amargosa River. When one is concerned about how Las Vegas "sucks" one must
focus on the other two aquifers that they have their eyes on, namely the
Railroad and White River valleys and Crenichthys nevadae and baileyi. It
has been my understanding that Las Vegas was attempting to buy up water
rights in both of these valleys similar to what LA did to the Owens Valley.
It was also my understanding that pro-growth politicians were also looking
to a favorable state legislature (read Republican) to give them this without
the need for a purchase (a little lobbying money and/or campaign
contributions go a long way).

It is widely known among fish nuts that Las Vegas sucks, big time! :-)

Devil's Hole was temporarily saved by a combination of factors, the main one

being not so much congress, as it was Bob Love and his activation of Nature
Conservatory to buy out some of the ranchers pumping down the local water
table, I'm told. The ESP and the courts made better press, but were way, way

too slow to be effective in time.

NC just has no way to compete with the housing boom around Las Vegas, and
the resulting insatiable demand for golf courses and swimming pools.

Somehow I have more sympathy with third-world farmers damaging habitat to
barely survive than with the same thing happening for casual entertainment
purposes, right here.
