Something similar happened to me a long while back. I let a sizeable tank go
too acid, and it etched away some lead plant anchors. The heavy metal
poisoning seemed to give them neurological problems including hiding,
dashing in fright, etc. Look for an introduced toxin, of some kind.
Meanwhile, heavy duty water changes might help if it *is* a chemistry problem.
