Re: Brine shrimp question
Edd here in Denver weighing in on the brine shrimp question.
Yes BBS can easily be killed in unfavorable conditions and turn into the
orange soup described. This happens to me if I can't siphon them on my
24-30 hour cycle and I let the setup go to the next day, Then its "soup"
and we need to start over with freshly made up solution.
But, I am able to recycle my brine just fine if I siphon them within 4-6
hours post hatching...and this works fine on my 24 hour daily cycle. I
reuse the brine for about a week or so and actually as it becomes more
seasoned, I may get better hatches after 3 or 4 days. After 10 days, yes
the nitrogen compounds build up and you have to start fresh
BUT...I may be able to do away with all this if the discussion from our
last CKC meeting holds up to be without pitfalls. One of our club members,
Chris Wetmore (who is probably out there listening right now) reported that
he raises ALL his fry on the Mike Reed No BS fry food. Chris no longer
hatches BBS at all. The no BS food is working for him, even on the very
smallest fry, like huberi, who will NOT take BBS for the first week or two.
I'm trying it starting this week and we'll see how it works for me.
