Re: Hey, I'm back

The Gardneri are doing fine, they are up to about half an inch now, and oddly enough, will not eat anything except for flake foods! Well, I am not sure about his real classification, I think it is one of those things that isn't finished yet, so some people call it the old thing, and some call it the new. I found out what he was from here: http://www.webcityof.com/miff1008.htm If you scroll down to Aplocheilus, you will see Aplocheilus Dayi Werneri, and then a little fish that you can click on to go to a page with information about it, and right next to the little fish is Aplocheilus Werneri, so I am not sure which he is, but either way, I am sure that is him. If you click the little fish, you go here: http://www.fishbase.org/Summary/SpeciesSummary.cfm?ID=25301 and then if you click on the picture of the fish, you go to a page with 2 pictures, the one on the right looks exactly like mine, but without the clamped fins. When I put him in the tank, I treated it with Kordon's Rid!
Ich +. I have Alxelrod's book Aquarium Fishes of the World, which has Aplocheilus Dayi in it, and it says a temp of 24.5 for him which is about 76, right? 4 degrees is a little too much for him I guess.. I can't raise the temp in my 125 yet because of some of the other inhabitants, I have about 15 Bluefin Killies, which I was under the impression were another color form of Aplocheilus Panchax when I bid on them in an auction, imagine my surprise when I got these fish that I had no idea what they were. Luckily, they were in my book.

Hello Chris! How are the gardneri?
The dayi are lovely fish.

I had a similiar problem with the dayi I got in my local petstore.
They would only take baby brine shrimp and slowly languished and
died.:-(
The problem I suspect is a flagelate infection of the gut. The
clamped fins are a result of perhaps an bacterial infection or just
of poor condition. YOu can try to treat the ailment with
metranozadole at 20 mg/gallon for 3 days with 50% water changes each
day and a new dose. YOu could also try some of the local meds for
hole-in-the-head or bloat. These are all very strong medications
though so be careful and don't treat a big tank with other fish.
Remove him to a smaller tank for treatment.

The pH and hardness are fine but the temperature is a bit low for
this fish. It would need a temperature of about 78 to 80 to be really
happy but this won't stop it eating.

I don't think you will find any dayi 'werneri' as this is not a valid
name. There is a Aplocheilus werneri though... You should be able to
find dayi in the AKA somewhere. If they were at one store I'm sure
other stores woudld have.\

Keep well
