Re: Hey, I'm back

Hi Chris,

Glad you are back on the list. A. dayi "werneri" was described as a
sub-species of A. dayi back in the 1960's. I believe the difference between
the two was based on the coloration of the females -- "werneri" females had
more bars -- and the males having more orange in the fins. I don't know if
this distinction still holds today or if werneri is considered to be just a
color form of dayi.
The Asian wholesalers always have dayi on their lists. Dolphin Intern'l
in LA always has it available.
Your fish may have an internal parasite or it may have the ever common
columnaris infection. Do you see any slime-like build up on its sides when
the light hits it just right? Chances are it hasn't eaten much since it was
imported and may just be very weak by now. Watch for disease due to the
weakness. Baby brine shrimp is always a good food for sick fish -- easy to
catch and swallow when they don't feel well. Mosquito larvae or fruit flies
might be good as A. dayi is a top water feeder. Are the Golden Wonders
bugging it? Intimidating it? They could be the trouble if the dayi was ok
when you were conditioning him and now is acting poorly with the GW's.
I hope all the fry are doing well. Welcome back.
