Re: cameronense question

Hi Gary, Nevin here in St. Louis. I am specializing these days in the
cameronense group (mimbon, maculatum, cameronense halleri, cameronense haasi,
and cameronense cameronense. I always keep them in large groups in a 10
gallon tank, maybe up to 30 adults per tank. My rationale for this is that it
will help reduce inbreeding with so many adults contributing to the gene
pool. when I distribute these fish to other killie keepers I try to give them
individuals which are not brothers and sisters. When I maintain a strain of
cameronense I try to start off with more than 10 individuals from the
original population. For my mimbon and maculatum, the initial founding
members numbered around 25 adults. In keeping 30 adults together in one tank,
I don't see any nipped fins on the males I think primarily because their
aggression toward other males is spread out among many males. I see lots of
male-male displaying but it appears to be short lived. One thing I like about
the group spawning thing is that the males that are displaying against other
males in the tank really turn on their most brilliant colors. Quite a show
all for a little sex. I wouldn't recommend trying only two males in a tank. I
once tried this and found out that one male becomes dominant and the other
kind of withers. Nevin in St. Louis
