Many years ago some aquarists used them on fresh water tanks.  I had one on
a 29G once and it collected 'stuff'.  Never really studied its
effectiveness.  Then the prevailing wisdom came that they were only good on
salt water tanks because salt water has a 'natural' foaming quality that
aids in 'stuff' removal.  I have always wanted to go back and try them on my
killie tanks.  I tend to think they have value.  Actually, if you keep salt
in your water for killies, it may work marginally better than on straight
fresh water.
