For fresh water, you can get most of the benefits of a skimmer by using a trickling filter instead. I use home-made ones on individual large tanks and on sumps serving racks of tanks. Microbes in the biological bed of the trickling filter do a great job of removing organics. A trickling filter is so effective that I have one on a barrel that regenerates my salt water for hatching brine shrimp.
