What about Caridina shrimp like what Amano uses? 

I have shrimp from the Orange River (big river on South 
Africa/Namibia border) what do quite nicely. They don't eat eggs or 
fry and really like algae etc... The down side is that the gardneri 
and Chromaphyosemions have no problem eating them!
