Re: Fruit flies and temperature sensitive mutations

Some money saving tips.

1. 10 oz Tropicana Fruit Juice bottles are great for culturing fruit flies.
Sam's Club has 24 bottle cases with either grapefruit juice or orange.

2. When you got the bottles cheap foam can be had from
http://www.allaboutfoam.com. Click the "Conventional Foam" link and at the
bottom you will see "Cylinder". Click that and you can order 48 in lengths in
the diameter you need and cut them into 2 inch lengths for the bottles. If you
are using the Tropicana Fruit jars the diameter is 1 1/4 inches.

3. Both "Carolina Biologicals" and "Ed's Fly Meat Inc." have instant food
available. Much easier then cooked food. And if you are really cheap, like
me, Ed's sells the mold inhibitor as a separate product. A super economical
fly food can be prepared from Instant Mashed Potatoes and cheap Fish Flake in a
ratio of 20:1 with the mold inhibitor added to that. This is near similar to
the prepared instant foods at 1/20th the price.
