bulkheads etc

A couple of months ago I built a circulating system for brackish killies and used what I call constant level siphons.It worked fine for 4-6 weeks and then I started having failures and couldn't figure out why so I went back to drilling tanks for stand pipes as old Mr. gravity never fails.May be a design flaw ?
