Brazil 2002, 2003
I'm off again to southeastern Brazil this December and hope to go collecting with the grad students at the Federal University. No killies found so far, but Rosario LaCorte called me last night and gave me some tips on where to look. He's been to the same location. Also hope to bring back glandulocaudines, tetras, and catfish. Advice? Tips? And a reminder that ASIH, the professional ichthyology society, is having its 2003 annual meeting in June at Manaus, where the Rio Negro empties into the Amazon in central Brazil. I plan to go and visit exporters, plus perhaps take a trip up the Rio Negro to Labbish Chao's laboratory. If not the trip of a lifetime, it will be a dandy, especially with all those fish people present. Brazil, by the way, is quite inexpensive. As to getting fish back to the USA, I have Brazilians do the collecting under permit (they they give me the fish), then ship them within Brazil to an exporter, who ships them to a US importer, who ships them to me. It's t!
edious, but it's legal.
