RE: What killie would be good for me? Newbie here
Hi basf767 at hotmail_com,
Most killies can do well in such a set up, but here are some things to be
careful of:
-Killies can and do jump, so cover all the openings on this type of tank
setup.
-You can set up a pair, trio or small breeding colony, but make sure it is
composed of only one species or specific population strain. Mixing/breeding
different species serves no purpose unless you are engaged in a scientific
study.
-Silk plants are ok, but there are many low light requirement live plants
that would work better because they help absorb ammonia and provide
infusorians a home, which in turn feeds newly hatched fry.
-Killies are rather temperature adaptive provided their other requirements
are met. Depending on the climate you live in and the particular room in
the house they are kept in you may not need a heater. I live in the Chicago
area, keep my fish in a large basement and use no heaters. The temperature
gets down to about 70F at night in Winter. Your conditions may be
different.
-You may want to start with an easier plant spawning species such as
Aphyosemion misaje. There are many population strains of this species so
note exactly what you obtain from someone and keep them separate.
I am sure others on the list will have other suggestions.

Subject: What killie would be good for me? Newbie here
Hi everyone
Brand new to the list here with a few questions...
I just got a five gallon tank as a present (it's the walmart version of the
eclipse style I believe) and would really like to get a pair or trio of
killies to keep in it. I've been looking wistfully at pictures of killies
for a long time but never saw any for sale at the LFS - well, none that were
gonna live very much longer anyway.
I've had large numbers of platies for years, so I'm not new at all to
aquariums, just to killies. My questions, I guess, are:
1) Is it feasible to keep a few killies in a 5 gallon setup? It has a
biowheel filter and I was planning on putting about a half dozen small silk
plants. Can keep the temperature at whatever range they need with no
problems.
2) Are there any specific types that would be happy in such a setup? I like
pretty much all the killie pictures I've seen, so I guess anything goes.
3) I would like to breed them if at all possible, would such a setup be okay
for that? I know I'm gonna have to get a book, but generally speaking?
That's enough for now, lol.
Thank you for your time
