RE: AW: Mixing Fry(babies)
I have thought about doing that with things such as my drawers, but all of my drawers are ALREADY full of fish supplies! Old power filters, extra airstones, tubing, charcoal, chemicals galore... The usual.I already know how to cut glass, I bought a small long tank designed to house 6 bettas, and I modified it to house, so far, 3 different kinds of fish. Right now I have it set up for 2, and it is designed so the water will circulate from section to section and the fry cannot get through. So I can house my N'Sukka and Akure, hopefully, in a few days(they are supposed to hatch tomorrow or the next). The local thrift stores are ALWAYS packed with tanks, but yes, this has always been my problem, I am shot for room. One of our spare rooms is filed with old cr*p which needs to be sold, but we are going to clean it out so I can put my chinchillas in it and let them run free more than usual, so I can put some tanks in there, as long as I completely cover the sides so the chinchilla!
s cannot get to the wires and such, they love to chew on wires for some reason. We actualy have a room above our garage that must be 45 by 20, but it is filled with stuff also, r/c cars, planes, and boats, among some other old junk, which will be cleaned up soon also, but it tends to stay in the upper 90s in there in the summer, so if I put fish there, I have to tlak my dad into cutting a hole in the wall for an air conditioner, plus the electrical bill. My room has 2 dressers, a desk, my bed(of course), chinchillas and cage, and 4 tanks, soon to be 5. I have a 2,5gal, a 3, a 5, a 10, and soon a 40 ontop of my desk, which I don't use. I planeed on using the 40 for some African Cichlids, but maybe I will leave the 3 cichlids in the 10 for now, and put Killies in the 40, lol. Of course, my dad's room has plenty of room, but I seriously doubt he wants a smelly messy fish tank in it. Our 125 is stuffed in our dining room, but we never eat in there, and I don't think he would let!
me put one newhere else, maybe a small one, like a 29, next !
to the 125. Aren;t a the strange 17 year old? ;)

I was about your age when I started to get really involved in fish
keeping. I didn't have much money, so I took all the drawers of my
dressers, lined them with plastic and then filled them with water. My
mother took it pretty good when she found out a week later. People are
always throwing away 10 gallon tanks, let everyone know you are looking for
tanks. Check the Salvation Army and other thrift stores continually. Last
month I missed getting a 55 gallon with top and light for only $25. Watch
for old windows being thrown away and learn to cut glass and repair broken
aquariums. In no time your problem will change from not enough money to
buy aquariums to not enough places to keep aquariums.
There are all kinds of neat projects involving tropical fish. I was a
finalist in the Westinghouse Talent Search with my research on trying to
influence the sex of swordtails in the womb by dosing the water with
testosterone. This not only helped get into a good college but also got me
a scholarship.
Try this with your gardneri fry. Store some eggs at 70 degrees and some at
78 degrees. Keep them at these temperatures until they are sexually
mature and see if the temperature had an affect on the sex ratio. It may
not work with gardneri but I'm sure it will with some other species of
killies and I wouldn't be a bit surprised if it worked on gardneri.
Take a killifish egg to school and put it under the microscope (don't use
too much light or you'll cook it). Watch the blood flowing through its
veins and watch the heart pump.
Have fun with your fish and they'll bring you a lot of satisfaction, just
be patient and get as much knowledge as you can.
