Re: Heterandria formosa - is it a Killi?





Killies and many livebearers are distant cousins, in fact both are sometimes called tooth-carps. The odd thing is that some sharks are livebearers (e.g. the Great White) and some sharks are egg layers. Apparently the reproductive mode is considered so plastic that they are all still sharks. The same does not seem to apply to poecillids and killies, lampeyes and medaka. And yes the least killifish is a livebearer, and not a killifish as we'ed use the term. Perhaps the LK has its common name on a Grandfather Clause since the original meaning of the term is supposed to mean a fish from a "kill"( a small stream).
