water change musings
Erik:
Is there any way you can tell me how much damage
a freshwater dip does to saltwater fish? I always felt
it was leser of two evils, sometimes necessary, and a
darn good preventative. Would a 50/50 dip be less
stressful to the fish, yet effective? Is a 50/50 dip
for double the time less stresful to fish? With fish kept
in a 50/50 like scats and mono and puffers, I have always
seemed to have better luck riding parasites by first going
back to full salt, then the freshwater dip. Freshwater dips
did not seem to rid parasites from 50/50 fish.
Also I do often throw in a little salt after draining a tank to say
10% of capacity, then add water as I continue the draining.
That slight amount of salt seems to hlp far more than a little
salt all the time. I had considered damage to golls, not cells.
Does any if this damage come out at a later date?
New salt arrivals are often at about pH 6.8. A dip then is very
hard on them. Often I do nothbung and wish that I had. Other
times I do a dip and wish that I hadn't. And I don't have exact
records as I failed to write in down and file as I should have.
If you have any studies I can look up I'd be eternally grateful.
