I was a reviewing proofreader for Dr. Ken Lazara in the preparation of KMI4
and I can foresee some problems with a spell checker based on the KMI. The
first and foremost problem is that the text contains many deliberate
misspellings because they are part of the literature. Would you want the
spell checker to include them? I don't think so. The second problem is not
with scientific genus and species names but with collection names. Local
spellings in many collection countries are strictly local option and quite
variable. Which one or two would you include in the spell checker? The third
problem is with the sheer magnitude of such a task. However, that should not
deter you from doing the following. First, find or create a text document
that includes the names that you want. Then run a spell check on that
document and add every word when given that option. One possible list of
species names could be the KMI 4 Ready Reference Guide to Names available at
http://ark.killi.net/AList.htm
You can copy and paste that text into a mail or word processing program
and then run the spell checker and add every word to your custom dictionary.
If nothing else comes of this effort besides your personalized custom
dictionary, you will also have spent some time imprinting the names in your
mind. Both are worth doing. You can do the same with any other document that
is on line and can be copied and pasted. (Some Adobe Acrobat documents cannot
easily be copied.)
