They get fresh water only when it rains and that is extremely soft water -
that's it!
Actually they may be getting very considerable and constant water changes
from the water table. Several years ago, while making comparisons with back
yard ponds, goldfish maven Stephen Mayer (sp) in AFM magazine suggested
there was a daily 90% water exchange between a forest pond and the water
table.
For a more detailed discussion of all this check out E.C. Pielou's hydrology
treatise Fresh Water published by the University of Chicago Press. The
location of ground water varies considerably and is ALWAYS connected sooner
or later with rivers, lakes, deep aquifers and, oh yes, what ever we bury.
