The flies will do better if they get lots of air. Most of the foam plugs get
jambed in the top of the container to tightly and restrict the amount of air
(anyone ever notice the flies congregating on the bottom of the foam plugs).
If you are not able to get plugs to match your container you can use filter
floss or nylon stocking material with a rubber band.
The moisture on the inside is both good and bad. Flies suck...literally.
They don't chew food...so some degree of moisture is a good thing. You can
mitigate the moisture on the side by providing enough climbing material on
the inside of the container. The material gives the flies someplace to crawl
without being glued to the sides. We have found that cramming the inside
with various nettings/shreddings and "stuff" have really increased the
production (and the life of the culture for some odd reason).
Many of the live foods cultured for fish (and other critters) benefit from
an increase in the surface area within the culture container (daphnia also
being one of them...cockroaches also).
Just some thoughts,
Jim
