Wondering about cultivating plants

I was thinking of farming my own plants in a small scale just a long shallow 
tub set out side with some water plants in it. but i was wondering if you 
could give me some infomation or direct me to some information about what to 
do for substrate, nutrience and co2 do i add co2 with a system or something 
eles? and do i add fish to it?
