RE: Microworm culture
Hi Dale,
I recommend plastic shoeboxes over smaller containers. The cultures last
longer and go bad more slowly.
I boil the oatmeal. It releases the starch and makes the mix more
digestible. IMHO.
I have used mashed taters. They work just as well, but as all of my killies
eat white and grindle worms that eat oatmeal I always have it on hand and it
is much cheaper than anything else.
I recently got a scarlet red bacteria in my culture. Now my microworm
culture is pink. It has no odor but it looks VERY COOL! Regrettably the
worms do not pick up the color
I feed the dead cultures to my rose bush. It makes great fertilizer.
I rinse the worms several times before I use them. Bacteria and fungi from
the worm culture can get going in your fry container. I have had a few shoe
boxes of fry turn into white slime. It does not seem to harm the fry but it
makes it hard for them to swim.
Peace,
~RJ~

Subject: Microworm culture
I have a microworm culture here in a small plastic
container perhaps 6 inches around and about 5 inches
deep. I kept on trying this culture since I started
keeping killies but with no avail. BUT NOW FOR THE
FIRST TIME..I ACTUALLY SAW SOME THINGS CRAWLING ON THE
SIDES OF THE CONTAINER!! ok maybe this is nothing to
be excited about..but I immediately scraped the side
with a cotton tipped applicator and dipped that in the
tank. My question is how could I get this culture
going? I'd love to have more of this. I have never
bought any small species of killies for fear of not
having a small enough food for the first few days. All
I have is bbs.
Thanks everybody
Dale
