Re: Duckweed vs. Salvinia
I also love "water sprite" but find it sensitive to water chemistry. In
Cleveland ( around 300 ppm TDS) ) it grew like a weed in all my tanks.
Never had a shortage of it and individual plants would grow to cover a 10
gallon. Here in Denver (60 ppm TDS) I struggle to keep it green and alive.
The plants that do survive are tiny and split off and then dont grow much
at all. Obviously something missing in our soft water that made it happy in
Ohio's moderately hard water.

In the humid environment under the tank hood or cover glass salvinia
and watere lettuce tend to pick up horrible fungal infections and
just die. Also their light needs are very high.
As far as floating plants go, duckweed and riccia are the best
bets... then again I've always liked indian fern/water sprite. The
deep penetrating roots also make for better nutrient uptake.
