Re: A. cyanostictum
George,
I am using a permanent/long-term breeding setup,
very successfully on D.cyanostictum (GBG 92/10).
This means:
I leave the breeders in a tank, depending
on how busy I am, between two - up to eight weeks.
The tank is full of peat fiber, java moss, some
oak leaves, and duck weed. Then I move the parents
into the next breeding tank - the last batch was a
4 week breeding, which gave me 37 fry!
I feed mainly life food and make sure there are
enough micro-organisms in the tank so the fry
have something to eat when they are young, i.e.
before they take BBS.
Looking at the size of the Diap's and their eggs
compared to other Killies (Diaps are small but yet
have larger eggs than say A. australe) tells me that
conditioning and short term breeding would not be as
successful as long term breeding. I can only
recommend the long-term breeding - it is also a
lot less work for you and less stress for the fish.
Moreover, I believe that having them in a natural
environment instead an empty tank with a mop makes
the fish happier and therefore more productive.
The aggressiveness of the male is minimal since
my tanks have a lot of hiding places. Also having a
trio or even more females (I currently breed 1 male 3
females in one tank) distributes the aggressiveness
of the male.
BTW: I use this breeding method for ALL my killies,
except for annuals - I have never used a mop.
I guess this is called the European/ natural breeding
method, after all I am German.....
Good luck and lot’s of fry!
