Re: Duckweed and Java Fern???

I disagree with this statement. Duckweed is very
difficult to eradicate from a planted tank. It grows
very quickly, it helps to control nitrates because it
grows so rapidly. Although it is the smallest
flowering plant, its flowers are tiny and its seeds
are tiny. Many aquarists have their tanks in their
basements where small insects lurk. After dark these
insects crawl from tank to tank and transport duckweed
from one tank to another. It also attaches itself to
nets and gets transported from one tank to another.
Unless you maintain careful quarantine procedures, you
will find all your tanks "infected" with duckweed.

If you want floating plants that soaks ups excess
nutrients use Riccia or Water Sprite. Both are
attractive and grow rapidly. Both of these plants are
much easier to control.
