It's more than you need.

If you discard the early rain, the only thing that would take out any 
significant remainder would be an RO unit, a still, or DI. If you have 
those, you don't need rain water! Use some filter floss if you have residual 
trash in the water (you shouldn't).

Carbon only really gets out stuff in any quantity, under high pressure and 
low flow, IME. At low pressure, it seems as likely to release crap as catch 
it. The coarse chips sold for aquarium filters are particularly worthless, 
IMO. You need fine powder in a cartridge to get significant surface area.
