Perhaps a more accurate term would be "exterpiated," hich means it no longer exists in a specific part of it's range, in this case, the collecting location.  The distinction is our benifit in terms of human boaundaries.

For example, the Starhead Topminnow, Fundulus dispar, is considered endangered in state of Wisconsin because it is at risk for being "exterpiated" from its range in that state.  It's natural range in Wisconsin extends only into the southern most waterways along the Illinois border (and the eastern most border of Iowa).  However, the species is widespread thoughout the state of Illinois and is not considered endangered.
