RE: Server

Barry,
A guess: a faulty power supply is trashing the motherboard.

Hi all,

I just thought you might be missing my regular reports on the health of the
AKA web server. Well, the server is officially dead. The shop has replaced
the motherboard (twice), the hard drive, the CD-RW drive and the MPU (main
processor), none of which has completely fixed the problems. Fortunately
this machine is still under warranty.

Yesterday I got impatient and called Apple to ask when they were going to
give up and provide me with a new machine. They told me that if the
replacement MPU didn't fix it, they would do so. I had my fingers crossed
that it wouldn't fix it, because I didn't want a machine that had had its
guts replaced without really finding out what the root problem was. It
turned out that the MPU did not fix anything, so I am to get a new machine,
which will actually be a better one than the dead one. The dead one is
outdated - after all, it IS 10 months old.

The new machine will probably take a week to get here due to paperwork and
having to send in the old one. I expect that early next week I will be
restoring the files to a new server. There may be some brief interruptions
to the web site while I do that. I will post a message when I am about to
begin.

Incidentally, I have owned a total of six Apple Macintosh machines and this
is the first one to give me any trouble. When something did happen, it did
so in a big way, but a full replacement under warranty keeps me happy.
