New killifish plague

I just picked up the rumor.

The latest research has turned up a killifish disease we all should look out
for.

I think the work was done at Stanford, and will be in next months NEJM.

It is propagated by shining flashlights on killifish that are minding their
own business. The reflected light is apparently highly infectious.

Symptoms are the urge to have more species than can be rationally supported.
Some strongly infected individuals have been known to travel across country
or even to foreign lands to satisfy the intense cravings caused by the
disease.

In the most absurd cases, the person has even been known to wade in filthy
jungle streams and to rave wildly at blown tires and torn mosquito nets.
[Ebola is classified as only mildly contageous, by comparison.]

More information will be coming out later, but this is all we have heard, as
of today, April 1, 2002.
