The accepted spellings are killifish, when using the full word, and killie,
when using the abbreviated form. In some of the very early JAKAs and Killie
Notes this was debated, but the resolution was to use the forms as stated
As a further affirmation of this, the Merriam-Webster Unabridged Collegiate
Dictionary, under killifish shows: Etymology: killie (in italics)
killifish (not in italics) with a date of 1836. From all indications, the
proper term is killie. Of course, if you want to project a "friendly" or
"politically incorrect" image, you can do anything you want. To use the
phrase, it is still a free country.
