It may be just a freak occurrence, but I kept a male gularis with a pair of
black angels and 5 cardinal tetras in a 25 gal tank for a few years.  The
cardinals were full grown and the gularis started out young about 2 inches
long.  Maybe growing up with the cardinals had some effect as they were
always with him and were too big to eat at the beginning.  I guess maybe
they were always thought of as tankmates not food since he started out small
and got used to them as company.
I would think that almost any of the Aphyosemions should do ok with the
cardinals.
