DNA Analysis at home -- was:Differentiating gardneri females

I have to make this comment to the list. I know it will spur comment but lets
keep it under control.

First let me premise this with the fact that I have a PhD in Molecular
Biology/Biochemsitry from Cornell. I spent the first half of my career with the
DNA/RPC/Restriction analysis world before deciding to chuck it all for a career
that turns income.

I am not relating the above for any ego boost but just as a prelude to my
statement.

I know enough about what it takes to do Restriction Analysis to think, and this
is the part that is open to debate, that with reasonable training the serious
hobbyist could do it. Certainly with modern amplification techniques you could
get enough DNA from a few possibly one egg such as we all collect 100s of
each day. The enzyme used could be chosen from one of the cloned, i.e. cheap,
variety. The only think left is the gel and tagging technique. I realize
that it would be impossible for the average home hobbyist to obtain a license
for Radioactive Isotopes but, and here may be someone closer to the current
research can comment, I understand there are dye alternatives to Isotope
tagging. There has been a good bit published, Costa et al, on the Restriction
Variance of many species. I think all that need to be done is to classify the
Restriction patterns of a few enzymes with known patterns and coordinate the
findings.

What does the list think.

I know i'm out on a limb here so keep flames on low please.
