I think the almond odor is noticeable in the pits of the fruit. Many people 
are unable to detect lethal levels of hydrogen cyanide. This is why it is 
considered so dangerous. Actually hydrogen sulfide is just as toxic but much 
more easily detected at lower than the toxic level. I had a labmate in 
graduate school who was working with hydrogen cyanide and he could not smell 
it. He relied on my ability to smell it to warn him when it might get 
dangerous.
