Re: Need Tips Breeding These Killies
Kean Haut,
I seem to remember you suggesting that your hardness was in the neighborhood
of 120 ppm. Should that be the case, it may be a matter of being patient.
(It may also be that you water source in DeKalb, if a well is actually
harder too.)
As has been mentioned several times here (boy Jim Gasior has been busy, it's
time to get him down to Chicago for a meeting again) separate the pairs and
then reintroduce them for a day or two. Separate and count the eggs.
I would also suggest looking for alternative spawning sites. Killies will
spawn on what they want to (gravel, the hated hair algae, any plant before a
mop sometimes).
You may be pressed for space but you might also put them in a planted,
graveled tank for a time. Feed them well. Maybe even include a worm jar so
they always have a small supply of blackworms to browse on. Then yank the
killies from the tank. You may be surprised as how many fry appear in a
couple of weeks.
Benign neglect in a so-called permanent set up also sometimes works. For no
particular reason even gardneri will sometimes no produce eggs for a spell
of even a couple of months and then go nuts for a long time afterwards.
Good luck and all the best,
Scott
