The yellow pages list steel suppliers that are mostly warehouses for larger
quantities (but not always), but if you want a smaller amount than they want
to sell, they often will give you small pieces of rod, etc., from their "bit &
piece scrap" inventory, or else lead you to someone who sells in that
quantity.
There are still a few (read VERY few) good hardware stores around that
understand and carry the less common materials in rod, tube and sheet form.
We are lucky enough to have one in our city, but that's it - one in the whole
city.
