Re: Help-Trouble with A. australe eggs hatching!!!
Hi Burt,
Same question came up from someone else last month or 2. I have the same problem with my Australe Orange. I have noticed that the more you change water in the hatching container the more the eggs hatch prematurely. I use acriflavine in the hatching container but change no water through the entire incubation period. I have learned that Australe eggs don't seem to like to be disturbed while incubating. I replace evaporated water with tank water only. This cut down on the problem quite a bit. When I do have fry that hatch prematurely I lose very few. If you see them hatch but they don't make it out of the egg, which very few do, gently suck them up in a tube and blow them back out until they are free of the egg membrane. Then just leave them in the hatching container with the eggs and they will continue to develop normally. I have had some hatch after only a few days but they continued to develop normally.
Hope this helps you.
Take care,
Joe in St. Louis!
