It should work, OK, Gary.
The only problem is that the tubes are designed for max. efficiency at a
higher (in air) temperature, so efficiency may be lower. The improved
optical coupling might partially offset that, tho.

PS. Be aware that you need a lot more insulation than for 120Vac. The
starting kick is usually many hundreds of volts.
