Regeneration of Daphnia after Freezing
Some time ago, someone wrote in asking if daphnia
could be spontaeoneously reproduced after freezing
some of the the bottom barrel contents in a freezer.
So, last Fall, from my inside culture of Daphnia
Moina, I extracted about 4 ounces of whatever was
collecting on the bottom of my dapnnia culture
(daphnia, snails, snail droppings, etc.), placed it in
a plastic fish bag and put it in the freezer. About a
week ago, I placed the iceball in a guart of fresh tap
water and let it sit by a window. I noticed today
that I have dancing daphnia in the restarted culture.
This of course makes sense that if it freezes ouside
and comes back, that it will do the same inside but I
had a few extra minutes and thought I'd try it just
the same. Who knows, maybe someone will start selling
frozen cultures as a starting medium.
