Each filtration system has it's own advantages. I would use UG for
non-anuals as the flow seems to help the eggs. They are great for setting up
a pair or group for a few weeks, pulling the breeders and waiting for the
tank to fill up with fry. A corner filter would be better for bare bottom
tanks in which the need for a lot of cleanliness is more important, or when
using separate containers of peat for spawning. Good plants would be
duckweed, java moss, java fern, najas, anubias and possibly water sprite.
